Message from the Referee Secretary

This is a note to all clubs regarding the appointment of referees, which has been issued in previous seasons, but am aware we have new members to our league, whom we welcome.

Due to the limitation of officials to our league, the custom is that I will seek to appoint officials for Under 16 to Ladies matches when requested. If the league believes for whatever reason, an official should be appointed to any age groups Under 16, this will also be arranged.

Should a club require an official, I would be grateful if you would contact me by Tuesday night the latest.

The League are more than happy for the home club to arrange their own official, so long as, the official is registered with their respective County FA and have a current Criminal Registered Bureau (CRB) registered number.

If the home club is unable to appoint an official, they must notify their opponents at the same time of confirming the fixture details, allowing them the opportunity to seek an official. If the away club is able to provide an official, it still remains the responsibility of home club to pay their relevant fee.

For those clubs with mini soccer teams, Surrey County Football Association run training sessions (one evening only) for officiating mini soccer matches. Once you have completed this training session, you are qualified to officiate mini soccer matches. If you or a member of your club is interested in attending this course, please let me know by email nigel.walker@scwgl.org.uk.

I hope that I have been able to explain the process for appointing officials, whether by club or league.

Enjoy the rest of the season.

Nigel Walker  - Referee Secretary – Surrey County Women and Girls League

Goal Difference DOES NOT COUNT

There were a number of HUGE score lines last weekend.  You are reminded that goal difference DOES NOT COUNT in the Girls Divisions of the SCWGL.  Please refer to Rule 12 for details of how the Championship is determined.

Teams “thrashing” the opposition do not help anyone.  The winning team will gain very little (or even nothing!) from such a display and who could blame the players on the losing team if they decide they never want to put themselves through such humiliation again?  It may come as a shock to those of you who think you are playing in the UEFA Champions League, but some teams are only there for the enjoyment – they know they will never win the League but they turn up every week simply because they enjoy playing football and, without them, you would not have a League to play in.

I appreciate that it is difficult to stop your players scoring goals (since that is the point, after all) but I would urge the Managers to stop and think about the long-term effect they are having on the opposition.  Managers should consider switching their players around or even taking some players off the pitch to be fair to the opposition.  What is the likelihood of teams wanting to play you in the return match later in the Season?  Or even for the weaker teams to refuse to play you at all?  Yes, you would be awarded the points, but wouldn’t your girls rather be out there playing on a Sunday than sitting at home earning 3 points?

At the moment there are no “rules” on such matches but the FA take a very dim view on these issues and, if it continues, it is likely that they will end up imposing something along the lines of “matches must stop at 8-0” or “8-0 is the highest score that may be recorded”.   I am sure none of us want that so I would ask you all to use your common sense.

I will be monitoring the results over the next few weeks and reporting to the Management Committee at our Meeting at the end of this month. - Karen Bailey SCWGL Gen Sec
