Surrey FA and Active Surrey Sports Partnership
As 2006 draws to an end I would like to say
a BIG thank you on behalf of the Surrey FA and Active Surrey Sports Partnership
to everyone who works so hard to enable the 2000+ girls and women who play in
the Surrey County Women & Girls League the opportunity to play football every
weekend. I would especially like to extend my thanks to Karen and all the
league officers who as well as volunteering in their local clubs also manage the
extensive fixture programme for the 140 registered teams. The league has grown
immensely over the last 5 years and as you can imagine so has the workload of
managing the running of the league.
2007 promises to be a big year for women and
girl’s football, a successful World Cup qualifying campaign in 2006 has resulted
in the England Ladies team qualifying for the Women’s World Cup in China 10th -
30th September. This success has also placed the England Ladies team amongst the
top seeds for the Euro 2009 draw taking place this month. On top of this
success Arsenal Ladies are the first English team to have reached the UEFA Cup
final.
The growth of the Women's game nationally is
reflected at a local level in Surrey and as the number of teams and players grow
the time pressures and workloads on current volunteers increases not only in
clubs but also for organisations such as the county women and girls league. If
you know anyone who would be willing to volunteer some time in the New Year to
assist with the everyday running of the league and ensure that the opportunities
offered for competitive football locally are able to grow alongside the national
success then please do encourage them to speak to a current league committee
member.

Christmas and New Year and thank you once again for all your hard work in 2006
providing football for the women and girls of Surrey.
