9 v 9 Update
Dear all, the introduction of 9 v 9 at under 11 age
group has been a fantastic success, this season it was for U11 age group only however next season it will be Under 11 and
U12. The existing U11's will stay at that format as U12's. You as this seasons U10s will be playing 9 v 9 next season as
under 11's. It would be a good idea to therefore think about this now and start preparing for it. Those of you with
existing teams at U11 will be fine as you have the pitches goal in place, those who don't will need to look at how you
will manage this next season. The league will help you so please contact us asap if you have concerns. I have highlighted
some of the issues and rules below to help you.
Please look at this now not next summer it will be too
late by then
Best Regards,
Frank Thompson [General Secretary]
The two main issues are
expected to be the goals and the pitch size.
Goalposts
We helped the clubs by
getting a grant and introducing a rental scheme. We followed FA best practice advice and purchased 30 sets of 16 x 7 portable
goals with anchorage kits. We also realised that there were in existence some 21 x 7 goals which were the old intermediate
size. So both sizes will be acceptable. Mini goals and full size goals can NOT be used.
Pitch Size
The is no actual definitive
size apart from it should be between Length 70-85 yards Width 45-55 yards The
recommended size being 80 x 50 yards. I have attached above a Pdf suggesting how this should be marked out. When I researched
this I saw a few different variations of the size of the penalty area. The example shown is 32 x 13 with proportionate
markings for the penalty spot at 9 yards etc, I have also seen 30 x 12 with a penalty spot of 10 yards. The only way this will
work is if we are sensible and prepared to be flexible. Some clubs will be able to mark out the perfect pitch, others will
have to by necessity have slight variations to this. We will even have to double mark some pitches in blue or red lines.
Pitches will vary all I ask is that what ever the dimensions they are completely symmetrical and proportionate.
We must understand that as
we are doing this ahead of the formal FA launch we will not have the luxury of just following FA guidelines. We really will be
pioneers and to some extent will be a test of how it will be shaped in the future. Before the inevitable disputes start I
would like to ask managers, parents and referees to stop and think why we are doing this, the whole idea is to make things
better for the players. If the pitch is half a yard short / long or the penalty spot is 9.5 or 10 yards does it really matter
as long as it is the same both ends. If we play on a pitch with a 32 x 12 penalty area one week and a 28 x 10 the next does it
really matter. Either scenario is surely better for the children than the ridiculous dimensions of a full size pitch.
The
rules of competition have been set out on page 41 of the handbook and I urge everyone to have a good read. I have copied them
below and added a few comments that should help in red.
